The fire outbreak at the office of Ondo state Governor Olusegun Mimiko has disrupted the meeting with the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ali Modu Sheriff. The fire was discovered by reporters and some party’s leaders who were waiting for the press briefing.
One of the sources disclosed that the fire started around 1 pm and destroyed some government properties, comprising important files in the governor’s office.
He said: “I saw the governor and the national PDP chairman moving like doves and speeding off in an official government vehicle to another location outside the governor’s office. I later gathered that they ran for cover at the governor’s house while the fire kept surging. Workers were begging for help so that the fire wouldn’t extend to their offices.” The governor quickly left his office with his guest to the government house, while workers were seen rushing out of their offices for safety.
Meanwhile, the fire brigade service was seen arriving Mimiko’s office 20 minutes after the incident happened. Kayode Akinmade, the state’s spokesman, confirmed the incident, saying the fire has been put out. Sheriff had earlier visited Rivers state to solicit support for the PDP’s aspirants contesting in the upcoming rerun elections being held on March 19, Saturday before arriving in Akure.
